A recent discussion of vintage smoking accessories caught our attention. These artifacts of a time past made us realize how extensive—and ubiquitous—the “fashion” of smoking was. But as fewer and fewer people puff, collections of ashtrays, lighters and cigarette cases become kitschy and quaint. It made me wonder about the modern-day equivalent: technology accessories. While our iPhone cases and laptop bags don’t have the same flair (or permanence) of a cut-glass lighter or artisan-pottery ashtray, it did spark an idea. Why not combine these two eras of tabletop accessories? I was struck at how the indent on an ashtray could be the perfect cord track for charging an iPod and a cigarette case could be a great way to keep cords and earbuds organized in the bottom of my purse. While that plaid-beanbag ashtray might be found for a few cents at a garage sale, I think my desk would benefit from a cool porcelain version.
