Farmers markets are one of my favorite parts of summer. The aisles of vibrant leafy greens, fragrant potted plants and sizzling bratwursts awaken my senses, and I love meeting the vendors and learning about their product. While there are a number of markets around Minneapolis, I’ve been frequenting the Fulton Farmers Market for a very specific reason: Rise Bagel Co. Started by Room & Board PR Specialist Kate Lloyd and her sister Jen, these self-described “bread heads” are filling a hole in the Twin Cities with their handcrafted artisan bagels.
After bagel-binging across North America for the sake of research, Jen and Kate developed a recipe using locally grown and organic ingredients. Can’t imagine a bagel without schmear? Have no fear—the sisters offer homemade cream cheese in a variety of flavors along with nut butter by Buddy’s, a Minneapolis-based business whose owner shares commercial kitchen space with the Lloyds.
As Kate’s coworkers, we’ve had the pleasure of taste-testing the various treats and look forward to the weekends when we can buy them by the dozen. And we’re not the only ones—Rick Nelson from the Star Tribune can’t stop singing their praises.
