Ben and Jerry, Holmes and Watson, Lucy and Ethel. The best collaborations are forged when people with differing skills are brought together for a shared purpose—often in ways they never thought possible.
Our Lars chair, featured on the cover of our 2015 catalog, is the result of one such meeting. We were looking for a way to create a timeless and comfortable chair, inspired by our favorite mid-century designs.
To begin the process, we approached Newport Furniture, our manufacturing partner based in Newport, Vermont. Their expertise with solid wood created the sculptural frame. The rounded edges, soft curves and welcoming proportions sparked an idea: instead of the expected cushion, could we find a way to use the seat and back material as a design element without sacrificing comfort?
Opportunity knocked when Natalie Quinn, our Upholstery Merchandise Manager, was on a trip to Italy. While visiting with the people responsible for many of our top-grain leathers, she learned there was one leather tannery right in our own backyard. Located in Red Wing, Minnesota, this tannery (the same one that handcrafts leather for Red Wing Shoes) could supply the perfect leather quality and thickness for a sling-style seat, one that wouldn’t stretch or crack.
The end result: a sculptural chair with a modern mix of materials that provides a masculine, yet warm appearance. Now through February 11, enter the Lounge with Lars sweepstakes for your chance to win our 2015 catalog cover model and bring a symbol of American craftsmanship into your home.
