Whether you’re a snowbird wrapping up the winter season or a Northerner dusting off the cobwebs for spring, now is a great time freshen up your patio furniture. In today’s post, we’re talking about how to spiff up our popular Montego modern outdoor furniture. Montego has three different materials: wood, steel, and outdoor fabric. Here’s how to clean and refresh each.
We apply an oil to Montego’s ipe wood to bring out the rich color before it comes to you, but re-oiling the wood is optional. It’s going to be strong and weather resistant no matter what, so it’s perfectly fine to let it weather to a grey. If you prefer a darker color, annual re-oiling will do the trick.
We recommend no-VOC Penofin Verde oil in Natural or water-based Golden Care products, including Hardwood & Teak Cleaner, Teak Protector and Hardwood & Teak Shield. For best results, follow the instruction’s on the products label. If you happen to get some on the stainless steel just wipe it off with a clean rag and paint thinner. (If you own Montego furniture with powder-coated steel, just quickly wipe with a clean rag since paint thinner will dull the finish.)
The Montego collection is made with 304 stainless steel, which is designed for outdoor use. In other words, this is the good stuff. It’s heavy, corrosion resistant and thick; however, even the best stainless steel needs a good cleaning now and then. If you live near the ocean or have a pool (read: salt and chlorine are in the air), you’ll probably need to clean it more often. For these settings, we recommend the powder-coated version of Montego so you can spend more time swimming and less time cleaning.
For most climates, all you’ll need to do is hose the furniture down with water when it seems dusty or dirty. If there are stains or signs of corrosion on the stainless steel, fear not. A quick cleaning with a metal polish like Golden Care Stainless Steel Rust Remover & Cleaner, no problem. (Note: don’t use metal polish you have the powder-coated version of Montego—you’ll dull the finish.) Here’s a trick for our lucky oceanside and poolside friends: put a light coat of car wax on the stainless steel for a layer of protection and faster cleaning.
Sunbrella® Cushion Covers
If you have cushions for your Montego furniture, the covers are made from sun-loving Sunbrella which is stain resistant and a breeze to clean. For a light cleaning, just hose it off with water. For spot cleaning or tough stains, mix one-quarter cup detergent with a gallon of water (add a cup of bleach if you have mildew or need to disinfect) and scrub away with a soft brush or sponge. Give everything a good rinse when you’re finished since soap residue is a magnet for dirt. Any zippered cover can be removed and machine washed with the same soap or soap-bleach mixture. Pro tip: Sunbrella should always air dry. No dryers, hot irons or dry cleaning.
Outdoor furniture covers are a great way to keep your everything clean between patio parties and during the off season. Check out our care instructions for more cleaning tips for all of our furniture.
