Customer comments about Room & Board California King Latex Mattress with Bio Cotton & Wool:

Bought this Cal King mattress in early 2009 for g/f and myself and in the beginning it was great. Very comfortable and just the right amount of firmness.

Not sure when it started going bad but probably around the 3rd year the back pains began. I didn't notice it was the mattress at first until a few trips at decent hotels made the light bulb in my head go off. Hotel beds = no back pain, this bed = back pain. At first the g/f thought I was just crying about it but eventually she started to get back pain too. She is 5'8" and I am 6'4". During the time we had the mattress our weight fluctuated between 140-150 for her and 200-220. We're not lightweights but i don't think we're heavyweights either.

Over the last two years, we both complained about the mattress here and there but convinced ourselves that it was in our head, we're getting older or possibly we worked out too hard....it couldn't possibly have gone bad so quickly. At times, either of us would get up in the middle of the night to go sleep in the guest room which was a smaller and 10+ y/o spring mattress. Well...we just moved to a new place and the Cal King mattress (which weighs a ton) went straight to the dumpster instead of the new place. Over the months approaching the move, we excitedly talked about getting rid of the mattress the same way we would talk about going on vacation to Europe or somewhere exotic.

Literally, the only reason we didn't get rid of it sooner was b/c it weighed so much and we dreaded the disposal process. We're now searching for something new and can't wait to sleep on anything else.

Customer comments about Latex Mattress with Bio Cotton & Wool:

We looked at latex mattresses for months before choosing this one. Our main hope was to find a non-toxic mattress. This one is slightly more affordable than others we looked at, and we liked being able to read about the makers (in MN) and their practices.
Mattress is comfortable and we have slept well from day 1.
      Delivery was professional and punctual.
Love that R&B discloses all important info about products, manufacturers, processes, etc!

Customer comments about Latex Mattress with Bio Cotton & Wool:

We've had this mattress 6 years. It was sold to us as a 20 yr mattress but we started seeing and feeling body impressions after 5 years. Throughout its life we flipped it as directed but there the impressions are. To put the users into context: we are regular size, regular mass people--both between 5'9" and 6', 150 and 180 lbs. So our expensive, crazy heavy mattress may make it to 8 years with us but definately not the marketed 20 yrs. Sad waste of materials. Our $300 futon has lasted longer!

        Service and delivery comments:

Customer service took 2 1/2 weeks to respond to our complaint about body impressions only after we called again. CS said the impressions were normal and not a warranty issue.

        Hmm.

Take away: noticable body impressions on a 20 yr mattress only a quarter into the life span is Room and Board's version of "normal". Got it. Buyer beware.

We were replacing a 15 year old mattress and wanted something firm but not too firm. After sleeping on it for a couple of weeks, we were struck by how much it feels mushy and uneven like our old mattress. Plus it is extremely heavy and ungainly and one of the most expensive mattresses sold by Room and Board.

Had to return this product (with the typical no-hassle Room and Board style) because even the firm side was very very soft. I was trying to duplicate a non-memory foam high density mattress I had used for 23 years but this was not it.
I ended up purchasing an ultra-firm mattress from another company. If you are looking for firm or ultra firm, this is not it.

Customer comments about Room & Board King Latex Mattress with Bio Cotton & Wool:

We were primarily looking for a bed made without flame retardant chemicals (this bed uses wool to comply with those government requirements), and R&B is one of the few brick-and-mortar stores that carries one. We've now been sleeping on the bed for about two months, and the comfort level has been great. There have been no issues with hot spots on the latex mattress, as we were worried about before buying. The price is high compared to conventional mattresses (with chemicals, springs, etc.), but it's actually very competitive compared to other chemical-free alternatives.

I purchased the king mattress (my first king size bed). Although I love the bed I purchased at R&B and the look of this mattress on the bed, I have not gotten a good night's sleep yet. A number of problems. First and foremost, it feels too hot for me despite 2 mattress pad covers. In the middle of the night I wake up a mess unless the air conditioning is way low! I use the firm side, but when I switch to a bed in the home that has a regular firm mattress, I sleep much better. So the firmness in the latex is just not enough for me. Second, the bed is difficult to make, especially if you want to tuck in the sheets which I do. Incredibly heavy and awkward to handle. Third, the price is high. So considering the above, I plan to return it and pick out another. I can see where others might like it, but it is just not for me!

I bought this mattress in 2000. I have NEVER had to flip it. It never gets an imprint whatsoever. The only con I see to this mattress is don't EVER have to move it. It is VERY heavy. Otherwise, it is extremely durable, no box spring necessary, comfortable, and elegant! I keep it covered with a mattress pad and it is still showroom new. You will never need another mattress. I laid on this mattress in the showroom and I was sold. It is like sleeping on air. Cool in the summer, warm in the winter with the proper bedding. LOVE IT.

I wanted a natural mattress that wasn't full of toxic chemicals. I've never had a latex mattress before. We switched from a regular mattress with a three-inch memory foam topper to this mattress and consider it a big improvement. The latex isn't hot the way that the memory foam sometimes was.The mattress itself is surprisingly flexible -[...]This makes it both easy and hard to make the bed -- it's easy to lift the corners of the mattress, but it's sometimes sufficiently floppy that the sheets are hard to get tucked under properly.

All of our mattresses, including latex, are designed to rest on slats. Nearly all Room and Board bed frames have a slat system that supports the mattress. The slats on our frames have approximately 2-3 inches of space between each slat. If your bed frame has more space between slats, you may want to consider purchasing a platform board which will sit on top of the slats and below the mattress. You can find our platform boards here: http://sitesearch.roomandboard.com/?tp=full&search=platform+board+collection

What is the ILD of the latex in the mattresses you offer (your site says "firm" or "soft" but trying to get more specific)? Also the the latex Dunlop or Talalay?

The Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) for the firm side is 34, the soft side is 20. Our Latex foam is manufactured utilizing the Dunlop process, using only 100% natural rubber. It is free of any synthetic latex and no fillers are used.

                              Hi
I am wondering what sort of latex is used in the construction of the natural latex mattress. Is it 100% botanical latex, or is it synthetic (SBR) or a blend of the botanical and synthetic which is often referred to as 'natural'.

It is 100% natural rubber so yes, botanical latex and not a blend.
