Dining Chair Materials & Craftsmanship

Room & Board dining chairs are available in a range of sizes, shapes, and materials (as well as stackable chair options) to complement your style and space. Using quality materials like leather, fabric and solid wood, our chairs hold up to daily use and look good doing it. For long meals, an upholstered chair is the ultimate in comfort. Our performance fabrics ensure our dining chairs are stain resistantMany of our artisans use time-honored techniques when making our modern kitchen and dining chairs. They use the highest quality U.S. and imported materials when making these pieces.

Our Philosophy on Dining Chair Sets

Room & Board wants to offer you maximum flexibility for your dining space, which is why we don't sell traditional dining room sets. All of our dining tables and chairs are designed to go together, so you can simply choose what you like best and make your own, personalized dining set.

We recommend allowing 24 inches of space for every person seated at your dining table. This allows you to get a natural number of seats around the table. If you are looking to maximize dining seating, a bench is a great option. You'll love the unique versatility and functionality they bring to your kitchen or dining room.

Types of Dining Chairs

The different types of dining chairs include wood dining chairs, fabric-upholstered or leather-upholstered dining chairs, dining chairs with or without arms, and stacking dining chairs.

Wood dining chairs are extremely durable and showcase the beauty of our sustainably sourced woods. Over a long timeline, wood chairs might show slightly less wear than fabric chairs, because their surface is hard. Wood dining chairs also change color ever so slightly over time as they are exposed to sun, air and humidity changes, which is a natural part of all solid woods.

People love our fabric dining chairs and leather dining chairs because they are upholstered with foam and fabric or leather, creating a soft, comfortable place to sit while you dine and chat. Fabric or leather dining chairs are ideal for dining rooms where you plan to host meals that last longer, giving people the comfort necessary to sit in place and converse for longer periods of time. Leather dining chairs are more expensive but also more durable, and over time they naturally accumulate small marks unique to your home, which is seen as uniquely beautiful and one-of-a-kind.

Our stacking dining chairs are made from durable materials like plastic and metal (plus a few wood and fabric options). These chairs are ideal for busy homes or commercial spaces that need outstanding durability. We craft all of our chairs, including our stacking chairs, to offer a balance of beauty and strength, in timeless designs that won’t go out of style as trends change.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dining Chairs

For regular maintenance of upholstered dining chairs, simply vacuum with an upholstery attachment. For spot cleaning, we recommend Folex® Instant Carpet Spot Remover. Blot up as much of the spill as possible with a paper towel. Then, spray with Folex and gently agitate with your fingertips. Once stain is fully removed, blow dry on low to prevent a ring.

The standard seat height of a dining room chair is about 18 inches.

You should have as many dining chairs at your table as you want. It might be a good idea to get the number of dining chairs that coincides with the number of people who live in your home. If you like hosting dinner parties or events, get more chairs. Each person needs about 24 inches of space at the table to be comfortable. You can put extra chairs off to the side of the room for storage when not in use, in corners of other rooms, or in your basement.
