Customer comments about Westport Leather Recliner:
The Westport is seemingly the only currently-available non-custom option for a recliner that doesn't look like a recliner. Form and function are a compromise, but this chair gets it right. I searched in vain for a recliner that fit both in size and appearance into my contemporary semi-Scandinavian living room until I found the Westport. It takes up very little space and is impossible to identify as a recliner when upright. Combined with its sleek lines and beautiful materials, that makes it an excellent dual-duty piece for a living room in which to host company by day and a family room to read or watch TV in by night. The seat is comfortable in any position including good lumbar support, although some may prefer to add a small pillow for more. The build is rock-solid and the reclining mechanism is crisp and tight.
I see two compromises in function, both of them necessary and forgivable: (1) the arms are hard, which is fine and not uncomfortable in the upright position, but when fully reclined only my hands and wrists can reach the arms, leaving nothing to support either my elbows or a pillow; and (2) the leather is uncommonly supple, which is outstanding to feel and beautiful to see, but given that a recliner is likely to see frequent use, I'm concerned with long-term durability. But that may turn out to be a non-issue, and in five months I see no signs of wear, except for the unavoidable and acceptable stretching where I sit.
Overall, the Westport is a rare beauty that fills a gaping void in the mass-market, and one of the few pieces this expensive for which I think the price is justified. Highly recommended.
