Welding Parsons Table

History

To create our exclusive steel furnishings, we partner with siblings Jim and Judy Bell, owners of a small Minnesota steel shop. The company, founded by their father in 1965, made radiator covers and security gates using age-old blacksmith techniques. But when we approached them in 1990 with designs for hand-welded steel furnishings, they welcomed the opportunity to apply their talent to something new. It's turned out to be one of our strongest partnerships.

Craftsmanship

"Every step in the process is done by hand," says Judy Bell. The steel is selected, drilled, formed and welded by skilled craftsmen. "The way our pieces are made—they are pretty much indestructible."

The welded areas are smoothed and oxidized to blend in with the rest of the surface; however, weld marks are intentionally left visible, adding unique, handcrafted character. Finally, each completed piece is washed, dried and given a clear lacquer finish, which lets the natural color of the steel show through and helps protect against rusting.

Responsibility

We've designed all our natural steel furnishings to stand the test of time, allowing you to use it and enjoy it for decades. In all areas of production, the Bells strive to eliminate waste and lessen their impact on the environment. The bases for our Slim and Linear collections are created from 95 percent recycled material. Our Parsons tables are built from 30 percent recycled steel. Scrap metal is donated to the shop program at a local high school, and water is recycled within the facility whenever possible.
