I just wanted to post an update. It's been about three months of living with the rug and the shedding has mostly stopped. At first it was intense but with weekly vacuuming and just every day life on it, the worst is clearly over. And it still looks great.

As others have mentioned, this rug sheds like crazy and god help anyone who sits on it with dark clothes. They get up looking like they have been wrestling with a dog. That said, I know it will get better with time as I have had a shedding rug before and I love this rug in all other respects.
I bought it after comparing it with the nearly idenitical ones at Restoration Hardware. The quality of this one is better with a tighter, denser weave and more consistant edges.
It is warm, comfy, plush and a great neutral backdrop, yet it still has a nice handmade character.
And as for the comments regarding furniture not sitting easily on it, I have several large chairs that sit half on & half off and it is not a problem as long as the chairs are good sized and have 4 legs rather than connected rails along the bottom. The two chairs I have like that need to either be on or off as otherwise the back half of the chair "floats" over the floor. I checked it out in the showroom before buying as well and the only other issue would be with a smaller, lightweight chair which might be wobbly if all 4 legs were not on the rug.

You have to vacuum it in the beginning to take away the initial layers of shedding wool but after that it is a great carpet for the price. Really soft.

This rug is amazing. It is so thick and soft that it feels great under your feet and looks great contrasted against my hardwood floors. You have to use a gentle setting when you vacuum it so that you don't cause fraying or shedding, but as long as you know that going in, you will love this rug.
