The top portion is open to the back, more like a etagere than a bookcase. I did not notice this until we received it. As a result, it appears cheap and inferior. On the other hand, it does the job in the room it's in. Certainly not worth the hassle of a return. So, I'd rate it as practical and good enough.

We purchased the Addison in Maple Veneer with the natural steel knobs in 3 different sizes, this 16 Width goes between the 23 and the 30 Width in our office and I am so glad we bought it! It fits slide in baskets perfectly that hold all of our camera/electronic stuff and the other shelves are displaying smaller art pieces/bowls for misc. stuff. We had looked at many options for our office on line and in stores and I am very pleased we went to room & board & saw these in person,,they are beautiful, spacious and sleek. They don't overtake the room which I love and I am happy to say even my biggest/overstuffed binders/bill organizers have fit in the cupboards and drawers of the 23W & 30W. Also, very happy to give our business to "local" suppliers. Thank you!
