Do not buy the White venatino marble!

By ETR

Pros

  • Good height
  • Great design

Cons

  • Poor finish
  • Poor quality

Best Uses

Customer comments about Rand 60x36 Table/Desk:

While I love the table design the the venatino marble lasted about 6 months. We had a party where someone spilled salad dressing on it and even though it was wiped up immediately the table was ruined. This is in addition to the fact any wet glass (again, even though wiped off immediately after) will stain. The table top looked like it had the Olympic rings all over it from the number of stains. Room and Board's response to our complaint was "this is normal." The sales person also said the table was sealed but obviously the sealant isn't that good. We ended up getting a quartz top at a local fabricator.

This is a beautiful table. I ordered the 72x36 in solid maple with shell stain and the stainless steel legs. It is the perfect size for our eat-in dining area. It's such a classic looking table with a contemporary spin to it. Room and Board was very easy to work with and very quick with delivery and installation.

Great look but the finish is no good

Customer comments about Room & Board Rand 60x36 Table/Desk:

I use this table as our main every day dining table. Have a family of 4.I've had this for 4 months. I love the look but I can't recommend this for two reasons. The first reason is product based and the second is customer service related. The second reason being the most important.I purchased the maple with shell stain. While it looks great the finish does not protect the table very well at all. I don't care about light scratches and normal wear and tear. My problem is that my former cheap [@]solid wood table had a longer lasting finish that held up for years. Wear and tear I expect but our family of four never did anything to completely go through the finish and see the untreated wood peer through on my [@]table. This finish was was easily damaged. I was very surprised that this table was so easily damaged to the extent it has been. Again I'm not talking about slight indentations or light scratches. It's supposed to be an every day table. I expected more from room and board products.

      Service and delivery comments:

Now this is what really bothers me. Calling customer support ended up being one of those frustrating calls that makes you cringe. According to customer support nothing should touch the table. If we use coasters and placemats, avoid candles etc... The table and finish should be fine. While I agree that by not using the table or having anything touch it is a great way to protect it, it's not practical and my complaint is one about the level and amount of finish on my table. I don't know if this is my table or a systemic problem with all them since I'm getting no support for my complaint and wasn't able to see if it the issue happens again.
Given that this is a premium product from a premium brand I expected better customer support and more pride from the company in standing by their product.
Given the benefit of the doubt would have been a nice gesture. Having someone come in and see the table. I've spent a lot of money over the years and I'm disappointed that my first two problems with their products led to very bad customer support. Didn't expect it and very disappointed. It's because of this that I don't recommend this product and maybe even any of their products. Just expected more from their support team.

This is an absolutely beautiful table. Love the repurposed wood and the stainless steel legs. The table has not been put thru the rigors of guests or spills yet. I only have some concerns about the table staining as it doesn't have a finish on it that will resists spills. I guess it will simply get better as it ages.

Customer comments about Room & Board Rand 60x36 Table/Desk:

We immediately loved the look and feel of this table. On one side of it is a wall of windows, and we didn't want it to block out any of the light to the rest of the room - check! The metal legs are sturdy, the top is spacious for six normally-sized people to eat, eight would be a bit of a squeeze. Our kids find it spacious to spread out their homework too! The top feels lovely and smooth although it is not high gloss. The only concern is that the grey stain seems a bit fragile, so we're anticipating a 're-fresh' will be needed down the road. It is fading with wipe-downs; and the kids aren't allowed pens or painting activities on this table. Otherwise this table would be 5 stars. R&B delivery services were great -they stayed in touch with us pro-actively and showed up right on time.

Small dining space that was weighed down with traditional tables.
The sleek thick glass top opens the room and allows the chairs to be
the focal point. Dining Room is long and narrow.....this piece allowed
that problem to be workable with.

We have the eames molded arm chairs, would they slide under the table in its current height or would I have to custom order it an inch higher? We have to have a table that cour chairs can be tucked under but also want to be comfortable eating. Thanks.

The table clearance on the Rand is 28”. The arm height on the Eames chairs is 26”. They will fit underneath the table for a few inches, but the arms do slope upward and will eventually hit the edge of the table.

A wood top will be attached to the table base with screws. If you order glass or stone, the top will float on bumpers and the weight of the tops keep them in place

The quartz is a very durable top and tougher then granite, however the resins in quartz composite tops may patina over time if exposed to full long periods of direct sunlight. This is one of the reasons Room & Board does no offer this material as an outdoor top option. Yes, wood naturally patinas in sunlight. Moving objects and allowing the wood underneath to catch up with the rest will help self correct that. Is the white glass option a solid glass or can you see through it.
Is it a pure white or does it have the greenish tinge that many frosted glasses have?

                  How thick is the glass?
Do you send samples of the white glass?

The White Glass has a colored film that is silkscreened onto the underside to create a white glass tabletop. The glass is lead free and low iron creating a very clear glass to allow the color from underneath to filter through.
                    Glass is 1/2" thick.
Yes, 4x4 table top samples can be ordered and is a great way to view the materials in your home environment. http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product/detail.do?productGroup=24960

How durable is MDF? We have two young kids, are we going to have a ton of scratches on the table. Also, what are other durable material surface options?
                  Thanks!

                    A:

There are a couple of approaches to consider when looking for a durable table top for a busy family. The first is to consider price and opt for glass or mdf knowing they will show scratches over time but would be easier to replace when kids are older. The other approach is to purchase a solid wood top knowing it could be refinished if necessary. Granite and quartz, of course, won't scratch but they are an investment. MDF is very durable and a strong surface. The color comes from a painted finish that is sealed with a laquer to protect it from scratches and spills but placemats and coaster are recommended to keep the surface scratch free.

                    A:

MDF stands for medium-density fiberboard and is an engineered wood product formed by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibers. Combined with wax it is formed into panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is denser than plywood. The MDF top has a powder-coat finish making this an affordable yet durable table top option.
