I had a 72" space in my kitchen and used this 24" shelf together with the 48" counter top table to add both stylish and practical storage and work space. They fit PERFECTLY!! One shelf holds various liquor bottles, another a wine rack, another a fruit bowl, another large dinner plates that don't fit in my cabinets and the top has a decorative plant on it. The shelving unit is very sturdy.

The Slim bookcase arrived rusted, pitted. A brand new item unwrapped had rust spots on the verticle areas. This was picked up by Room & Board for return at no charge.

Given that I ordered the larger width, I was a bit worried that they would bow with weight in the middle. I'm happy to report that they do not bow at all, even with stacks of heavy books. They are an excellent value for the money and I've already gotten several compliments on them. They are really great if you're looking for something to hold your stuff without taking up too much visual space.
I'll also add that I was VERY impressed with the level of customer service and the helpfulness from the R&B employees.

I use the shelves right in my entry way in a small space that the etagere just fits perfectly into. It's slim construction takes up very little visual space, and so it doesn't overwhelm its surroundings. I use it for some photos, decorative items, and books. It's primarily for aesthetic use, but also expands my overall storage capacity.
Service and delivery comments:
The first delivery of the Slim Shelves was damaged with a slight bend on the top and an overall slanted alignment.
Room and Board Service was outstanding with immediately arranging for a free replacement the following week. The second shelf I received is perfect and I am now very happy with the purchase.

This material is ideal for book storage and the narrower widths won't have any issue for storing large, heavy books from side to side. If you are considering the 42"w etagere, you'll have the potential for some bending in the middle of the shelves over time if heavy books are stored the full width of the shelves.
