We are a big fan of Artemide's Tolomeo Collection - from having several variations of the classic desk lamp in our den and as bedside table lamps in the bedroom, to the Mega floor lamp in our living room that anchors our sofa beautifully in an open space. As avid readers, we had a need for a reading lamp to sit between two lounge chairs in another area of our living room. After perusing the other floor lamps available through Room & Board, it was a no brainer that we would stay within the trusted and beloved Tolomeo family and select the Tolomeo Reading Floor Lamp with Parchment Shade.

We did experience an extended wait time for this lamp, and hoping that it was worth the wait, we assembled the lamp and placed it in our living room. After we plugged the lamp in and switched it on, we realized that the "neck" of the lamp (where the shade meets the arm) was loose, with no tension to keep the shade in a raised position. In order to keep the shade level, we had to lower the arm so that it was almost parallel to the ground for the shade to not just dangle.

After examining our other Tolomeo lights, and referring back to the Room & Board website to view the photos again (second room view, where the photo shows the shade positioned), it was clear we had a defective light. Knowing the whole point of Tolomeo is the high degree of functionality and ability to position the shade with little effort, we were quickly disappointed in our new floor lamp with it's shade hanging there limp and flaccidly.

We ordered this through Room & Board, knowing they stand behind their products and that of the manufacturers they represent. Although Room & Board and the Associate I spoke to was helpful in initiating an exchange, I was disappointed that it would be about another month for a replacement.

And finally, the wait is over, not even fifteen minutes later since the Room & Board Delivery Professionals left here to exchange my defective floor lamp that I sit here with yet *another* broken floor lamp with the same issue! It is clear the fault lay with Artemide and a faulty design. The Delivery Technicians fiddled around with the floor lamp for quite some time, and just could not get the shade to pose with a modicum of tension. The Delivery Professional called in to report the issue with his supervisor, and then informed me the lights were backordered until the end of the month.

This is a nice light and I can see how it would be a great design that fit our needs perfectly, but unlike our other Tolomeo products, I can honestly say I'm no longer a fan. I'm going to hope the next floor lamp they switch out wins me back but at this point it's been disappointing to say the least.

Service and delivery comments:

The product was backordered when I placed the order, and after a month of waiting I received a defective floor lamp consisting of a dangling shade. While Room & Board was great in initiating an exchange, it took another three weeks to get the exchange for another broken floor lamp with the same issue. I'm extremely frustrated that I have to wait until the end of the month for ANOTHER replacement.

I understand the problem lay solely with the lamp's manufacturer (Artemide), and not Room & Board. The customer service and two gentleman who came to perform the exchange were helpful and top of things.

I love this lamp. It looks great - contemporary yet minimal. It provides ample light for reading and otherwise makes great accent light. I'm very happy with this purchase. Good investment.

Great lamp! Very easy to put together (although a second set of hands is useful) and very very well made. Very bright light, used only for direct lighting. Would be better if it had a dimmer setting, but overall happy with this product.

I was looking for an arc lamp for a long time to put behind a couch. Most had marble bases, weighed a lot and broke the bank. this is a very functional, contemporary lamp!

This is a great lamp for my high-ceiling, modern loft. It's not going to flood a large space with light, but the output is adequate. I've had it for over a year and the build is second to none.
