Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are these shades easy to operate?

Roman Shades are very easy to operate and a Flat Roman Shade is no exception. Our standard control allows you to operate your shades consistently and with little effort. Our continuous loop option is an excellent choice for larger shades.
    Consider a continuous loop if:

    • Shades are over 60" wide and/or 72" long
    • Shades will be in difficult-to-reach areas
    • Shades will be opened and closed very frequently
  • Will these shades help insulate my windows?

Assuming you select a lining (Blackout Lining or Privacy + Interlining are best) your shades will provide an additional layer of insulation. For windows with a significant draft, consider adding non-closing drapery or "side-panels" to help keep cold air out.

  • Can this shade block out all light?

The level of light blockage and privacy you will get from a Flat Roman Shade is mostly the result of the material you select and the lining you choose. Generally speaking, the heavier the material, the less light will come through. By adding Blackout Lining you will block the majority of light. Small pinholes of light may be visible where the rings are hand-sewn to the back of the shade. If you mount the shade within the window (inside mount) there will be a small gap on the sides for smooth operation and functionality that will let some light in. Selecting an outside mount will reduce the amount of light, however, the shade will not be flush with the wall so some light will still come in.

  • I love the look of these shades but am concerned that even when open they will block much of my window. What can I do?

The stack, or how much of the window is blocked when the shade is open, depends on a variety of factors, including material and lining, mount type and overall length. To keep your window completely clear when the shade is open, use an outside mount and place the headrail high enough above the window frame for complete clearance.

  • What are the differences between the linings that you offer?

Privacy: offers light filtration, privacy and acts as a protective layer against sun damage.
Blackout: blocks 99% of light for complete privacy and room darkening.
Privacy + Interlining: offers all of the benefits of privacy Lining with an added cotton flannel fabric that is sewn between the fabric of the window treatment and the Privacy Lining. Provides light control and insulation while adding fullness and body to the window treatment.

  • What are the differences between Standard Cord Lock and Continuous Loop?

Continuous Loop: Stainless steel chain control available on Roller and Solar Shades and as an option on Roman Shades. The continuous stainless steel chain lifts and lowers the shade while always remaining the same length. Highly recommended for very large shades.
Standard Cord Lock: String control system that operates Roman Shade

We recommended Continuous Loop for Roman Shades when:

    • Shades are over 60" wide and/or 72" long
    • Shades will be in a difficult-to-reach area
    • Shades will be opened and closed frequently
  • What is the option: "Top Down/Bottom Up" in Roman Shades?

This option uses two sets of lift cords so the shade can be lowered from the top down and raised from the bottom up. This versatile feature allows privacy while still letting light in, and can also operate as a normal shade.

  • What is a "tension device"?

This is a safety mechanism that affixes the Continuous Loop chain to the wall or window sill preventing a hazardous hanging loop.

  • Is it possible to cancel or change an order once it is placed?

Because production of your Custom Window Treatments begins immediately upon receiving your order, we are not able to accommodate
changes or cancellations once the order is placed.

  • What is a "mistake discount"?

In the event you've measured incorrectly or need a different color, we offer a 50% discount on your replacement order for the same
product on the same window when placed within 30 days of the original order.

  • Are the window coverings safe around my children?

Window treatments that feature pull cords or continuous loop chains include a cord cleat or tension device that secures to the wall. These safety features are required to be delivered and installed with each window treatment.

  • How should I care for my Custom Window Treatments?

    Professional on-site service is recommended.

  • Where are your products made?

Our Custom Window Treatments are handcrafted in Florida and Minnesota.

Measuring for Inside Mount

Step 1: Print measurement worksheet

Step 2: Measure the inside width at three locations—the top, middle and bottom. Record the smallest of the three measurements. This is your ordering width. We will make the necessary deductions (approximately 3/8-1/2").

Step 3: Measure the height at three locations—the left side, middle and right side. Record the largest of the three measurements. This is your ordering length.

Measuring for Outside Mount

Step 1: Print measurement worksheet

Step 2: Measure the width of the area to
be covered. For maximum light blockage, add 2" to 3" (1" to 1 1/2" per side) to your measurement. This is your ordering width, and will be the overall measurement of your shade.

Step 3: Measure the height of the area to be covered. This is your ordering length.

Note: For shades with an upholstered valance, the valance will be 1" wider than the shade measurement.
