Home Tour: A Designer’s Scandifornian Escape

Scandinavia, meet California. This design pairing takes the minimalist qualities of Scandinavian design and marries it with the bohemian vibes of the coast: light, bright and modern but also colorful, eclectic and a little bit retro. Aptly coined as Scandifornian.

Scandifornian, meet Natalie Myers. The Los Angeles-based owner and principle of  Veneer Designs created a private getaway in Yucca Valley, California that perfectly showcases this melding of styles. The small vacation home is located in the desert near Joshua Tree National Park. The best part? The home (and its 2.5 acres) are available for you to stay on Airbnb!

Living room

The entire home only boasts 700 square feet, so Myers had to be strategic from the get-go. She made sure each piece of furniture served a specific function and brought its own style to the space.

“I think there’s a tendency to go with quick easy flat pack products that can be shipped to a house and assembled there. I get that, but I also knew these furniture pieces had to be built tough to withstand an Airbnb.” – Natalie Myers

Kitchen & dining room

Myers removed an outdated granite island from the kitchen to open it up and make room for a table where everyone could gather. Her smart use of the Corbett bench (you can just see it peeking around the side of the table) instead of more chairs means she can seat more guests in a pinch.

Bedrooms

To make the bedrooms feel cohesive but not matchy-matchy, Myers mixed the same materials throughout both spaces. The bedroom off the kitchen features our Anton bed in charcoal stain, and you’ll see the same stain come through in the Hensley dresser in the second bedroom.

Outdoor area & deck

This desert dream home may be small, but it packs in a ton of functional outdoor space with dedicated spots for dining, lounging and a bar area with a fire table.

Myers’ choice for our Oasis modular sectional was a no-brainer. You can build modular sectionals to whatever size you need  – small or sprawling – and easily adjust the pieces on the fly to accommodate guests.

Pup-approved!

“Isn’t the rug EVERYTHING? It feels nomadic and tribal, yet also modern and minimal. I love it so much,” Myers says on Veneer Designs blog – which you can check out and explore the full story for yourself!
