You may know him best for his\u00a0eye-catching\u00a0Instagram feed<\/a>\u00a0and his beloved coonhound Maddie who has a remarkable ability to balance on things<\/a>. Theron Humphrey is a photographer with\u00a0a passion for adventure. In\u00a0the fall of 2011,\u00a0he hit the open road and traversed all 50 states with the goal of meeting one new person a day, every day, for 365 days. Since then, his social media following has grown exponentially.<\/p>\n

When he’s not on the road, Theron\u00a0calls Nashville home. It is where he just\u00a0built a 1,080-square-foot home overlooking\u00a0a one-acre lot in the city. He set out to create\u00a0an abode that was modest in size with an inspiring setting\u00a0that would also serve as his\u00a0photography studio.<\/p>\n

“I came to a place where I didn\u2019t need to fill my life with things. It seems like when you keep building larger homes you just fill them with more stuff. I\u2019d rather have a few well made things that will last and have heart.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The\u00a0two-bedroom, two-bath home features 14-foot ceilings and unique details throughout, including\u00a0<\/span>pocket doors and a\u00a0<\/span>shiplap ceiling.\u00a0<\/span>The space was designed with guests in mind\u2014providing\u00a0both private and communal areas.\u00a0\u00a0Two bedrooms\u00a0on opposite ends of the house flank the open kitchen and living room. Oversized sliding doors connect each room to a 600-square-foot deck.<\/p>\n

Theron\u00a0appreciates minimal design,\u00a090-degree angles and natural materials. When it came time to furnish the space, he immediately thought of Room & Board because of the company’s modern\u00a0designs that are\u00a0not only inspiring, but comforting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span>The\u00a0pieces have all the right lines and energy, but I also knew I would love sitting on the couch every night.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Theron worked with\u00a0Dave Kuhnly, a Design Associate\u00a0on Room & Board’s Minneapolis-based Customer Care\u00a0team. To begin the design process, Theron shared\u00a0floorplans and photos of his home. This gave\u00a0Dave\u00a0a good feel for the space\u00a0and helped in the planning of furniture placement and selection. Theron\u00a0also picked out three pieces that represented his design style to give Dave a good starting point. His short list included\u00a0our\u00a0<\/span>Grove media cabinet<\/a>, <\/span>Callan chair<\/a> and <\/span>Platform bed<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Theron says he was surprised at how quickly the vision for furnishing the home came together and in the end how little was changed once everything was delivered. Taking the time on the front end really helped. He says one of Dave’s best contributions was suggesting the Cade\u00a0sofa<\/a> because it’s “so comfortable, but has the right lines.”<\/p>\n

“Dave was awesome. If I ever had a question or suggestion he would always get right back with me. That sort of communication is really important when you\u2019re collaborating remotely. We had a couple of phone calls and he would always listen to ideas or suggestions I had. But, ultimately I wanted to give him the space to create a cozy home.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Theron has been enjoying his new place\u00a0for a month now\u00a0and is proud to say that he has created a home that is\u00a0more than just a place to live.<\/p>\n

We took the opportunity to learn more about\u00a0what makes Theron tick, his future plans, life on the road\u2014and in Nashville.<\/p>\n

When you were six, what did you think you\u2019d grow up to be?<\/h3>\n

A farmer. I spent every summer on my Granddaddy’s farm helping him. I really love that life, it\u2019s a hard one, but a good one.<\/p>\n

How would you describe your design style?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This is actually why I choose Room & Board! I love mid century design, but I also know I wanted the furniture to be comfortable and functional. Stuff I really will use every day.<\/p>\n

Where do you turn for inspiration?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

At my friends’ homes. A few of them are stylists and I end up enjoying talking to them way more and just seeing their spaces, instead of searching online these days.<\/p>\n

What won\u2019t we catch you without?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

My camera, my dog and my Land Cruiser. They always seem to be nearby.<\/p>\n

My perfect weekend would include:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Camping near a river up in the mountains.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your biggest pet peeve?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When light bulbs in a space aren’t all the same color temperature!<\/p>\n

What are your favorite design destinations in Nashville?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

White’s Mercantile<\/a> and Steadfast Coffee<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What inspired you to put Maddie, your beloved Coonhound, on things?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Traveling! That was just a lighthearted project to remember all the places we went that year.<\/p>\n

What toy or treat really gets Maddie\u2019s tail wagging?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Funny enough she\u2019s the least particular dog ever. She\u2019s motivated by any food.<\/p>\n

Of all the places you\u2019ve traveled, which destination tops your list?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I love Colorado. I love visiting there and spending time in the mountains. I was born and raised in the South so I never got that deep sense of being home there, but I travel the state at least twice a year and explore.<\/p>\n

We hear you\u2019re working on a new book! Tell us more.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I can\u2019t say much yet! But it\u2019s coming out in spring 2017 on Abrams Books. It\u2019s some of my favorite images I\u2019ve ever taken. Gonna be good!<\/p>\n

Your story is inspiring. What tips would you give someone who wants to quit their 9-5 lifestyle in search of adventure?<\/h3>\n

That\u2019s a tough one to give advice on ya know? Everyone’s story and path is so different. But if I had to distill my story down into a shot of whiskey it would be this: I came to a place where it was far more important to create what I had in me, to share my vision with the world, than to seek out some idea of security. I was willing to risk it all and was comfortable having way less on the other side to do something I loved. I came to peace with that.<\/p>\n

What do you want your legacy to be?<\/h3>\n

That I dared greatly and wasn\u2019t scared to be in the arena, even if I failed along the way.<\/p>\n
