Room & Board Leathers

Leather furniture is one of the few things you can buy that grows better with age. Like a slab of marble or a plank of solid wood, each hide is uniquely beautiful. Its texture and character elevates the look of any room. Plus, nothing matches leather's natural durability and longevity. With minimal maintenance, it lasts four times longer than fabric.

Leather is a great choice for families. Its natural durability makes it very difficult to rip or tear. Semi-aniline leathers, which have a protective finish, are easier to wipe clean when little ones spill.

Leather is uniquely beautiful

Part of leather's appeal is that no two pieces are exactly alike. Here are some of the natural characteristics you can expect in your leather furniture. These variations are most noticeable on full-aniline leathers, which are minimally processed for a more natural look.

Natural characteristics

In the leather industry, the leathers that look the most natural are the most prized. Visible wrinkles, scars and grain patterns are the signs of authentic, real leather.

Color variations

Every hide has a range of natural textures, which impact how it accepts color during the dyeing process. Within one hide the color can vary from light to dark, adding visual depth and interest.

Scratches

Leather is highly durable and difficult to puncture, but will show scratches from fingernails, pets' claws or even rivets on your jeans. Most light scratches can be rubbed out with your finger or a leather conditioner.

Patina

As you enjoy your leather furniture, it will show signs of use and develop its own lived-in look. Dark areas from the oil in your skin, scratch marks from the dog or fading from the sun all enhance its character.

Stretching

Just like a pair of new shoes, leather stretches as you use it. Some wrinkling or "puddling" is normal in the seats and backs of chairs and sofas. This doesn't weaken the leather—it makes it even more comfortable.

Many hides, one item

It takes more than one hide to upholster most pieces of furniture. Because hides are limited in their width, you'll notice more seams on leather furniture to make efficient use of this natural resource.
