Room & Board blog homepage
A blog on modern living

We’re proud to be a founding member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC). As such, we’re always looking for ways to make the most of every resource. We take”reduce, reuse, recycle” to heart. Read on for some surprising ways we put the idea into practice.

Reduce.

Our commitment to honoring natural materials means we use wood from carefully managed forests and strive to get the most material out of every piece of  lumber. We’ve created products made from the small pieces left over when a large board is cut to size for something like a table or bench. Using these pieces (called shorts in industry terms), we can use less wood to create more furniture.

Halifax turned wood candle holders

Our Halifax candle holders are crafted from rich walnut that comes from lengths of wood left after making dining tables. These modern candle holders are sized for tapers on one end, tea lights on the other.

Wilder walnut end tables

Designed to responsibly utilize all parts of the walnut tree it’s crafted from, our Wilder accent tables highlight a beautiful variety of tones and unique grain patterns.

Reuse.

We’ve designed a range of throw pillows and throws that reuse vintage textiles from around the world. These home decor items are not only sustainable, but each one is unique and provides a meaningful finishing touch to any room.

Ridvan throw pillow made from vintage rugs

Our Ridvan pillows are made from vintage Turkish kilim rugs. Years of use are evident in areas where the lining shows through, adding to the pillows’ unique stories. These throw pillows are available only in our stores.

Gouro throw made from vintage indigo textiles

Hand-made in the western countries of Africa, our Gouro vintage textiles are dyed in indigo using a paste- or stitch-resist technique to create unique patterns. No two are alike.

Recycle.

We offer a range of outdoor furniture and home decor made from 100% recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE), which is also fully recyclable. Solid and sturdy, HDPE won’t fade, warp or rot and requires zero maintenance.

Emmet outdoor chairs from recycled plastic

More than 300 recycled milk jugs go into each Emmet chair–and stay out of landfills.

Recycled plastic Orr modern wall hooks

To reduce waste, we designed our Orr wall hooks to be made of excess material from other products (like Emmet, shown above!). Plus, the 100% recycled HDPE is made primarily from post-consumer products. These modern hooks can be used indoors or out.

We’re always searching for new ways to incorporate sustainability in our collection. Watch for even more to come in 2018.
