Harvested from trees removed by the city of Minneapolis in response to an emerald ash borer infestation, these coffee tables have been treated with the traditional Japanese technique of shou-sugi-ban where they are flame charred prior to sealing for a rich black color.

Material Detail: A sustainable alternative to logging, this reclaimed wood is revitalized to highlight its unique beauty. Our charred reclaimed ash is finished using the Shou Sugi Ban technique-a method of partially burning wood that originated in 18th-century Japan as a way of making wooden home siding more durable. Finishing layers of stain, shellac and lacquer are added at the end, resulting in a durable wood with a deep, matte-black color.

Started in 2008, Wood From The Hood is a woman-owned business who works with the Minneapolis Park Board and local arborists to reclaim urban trees that succumb to storm damage, disease or construction. The small and dedicated team of artisans mill, dry and finish the wood in their shop to create one-of-a-kind lumber, then Siewert Cabinet & Fixture Manufacturing in south Minneapolis turns the lumber into sustainable furniture.
