How To Use Your Swatches

Finding the right fabric or leather is about more than choosing a color you love. The material you select affects how your furniture looks, feels and performs every day. That’s why ordering free swatches is one of the best ways to make a confident decision. Here are a few simple tips to get the most out of your swatches.

See Your Swatches in Different Light

Light changes throughout the day—so can the appearance of your fabric or leather.

Place the swatches in the room where your furniture will live and revisit them throughout the day. Compare them in morning light, afternoon sun and in the evening. Use a combination of natural and artificial light.

Remember that colors can appear cooler or warmer depending on the time of day, light source and even depending on the season. (Think: snow outside your window rather than green leaves.)

View your swatches throughout the day to see how the color shifts in a variety of light.

Compare With Other Materials in Your Room

Help create a cohesive look. Lay your swatches next to your flooring, area rugs, paint colors, cabinetry and wood finishes to see how they all work together.

You’ll also want to consider textures. Even when two fabrics share a similar color, a smooth weave can reflect light differently than a nubby boucle or a twill fabric. This can create a totally different feeling.

The same color changes character depending on the fabric type. For example, a color looks different in boucle fabric (left) than in flatweave fabric.

Consider Performance

Every room is used a little differently, and your material choice should reflect that. For example, a busy family room with kids and pets may benefit from different performance features than a formal living room. To learn more about the characteristics of each material, including fiber content, durability and performance features, use our detailed fabric guide and leather guide.

If stain resistance is important, we recommend you put your swatches to the test. Try an everyday spill, like coffee or ketchup, and see how easily the fabric cleans. Testing materials can help you choose a fabric that’s as practical as it is beautiful.

Semi-aniline leathers are pet-friendly and easy to clean.
