How To Measure For a New Bath Vanity

We recommend hiring a professional for a successful vanity installation, but first, measure your space to make the right vanity choice.

Floor plan shows at least 30 inches from front end of vanity to outer wall and at least 30 inches of width for toilet next to vanity

Measure Your Bathroom

First, get an idea of the space constraints of your bathroom.

  • You need at least 30 inches of space between the front edge of the vanity and the opposite wall, so you have room to stand at the sink and open drawers.
  • You need 30 inches of width for the toilet and about 36 inches of depth for comfort.
  • Leave clearance for doors and drawers to open, and don’t cover outlets.

Design Tip:
We offer two collections that are suitable for floor-up plumbing: the Linear wood base vanity or the Amherst vanity.

Find the Right Vanity Width

Your biggest decision is choosing the right vanity width.

  • All our vanities are 21.75" deep, 34" high and come in the same standardized width options (26, 36, 48, 60 or 72 inches wide). This means you can shop all vanities to find your favorite style, knowing the dimensions are the same across our collections.
  • 26", 36" and 48" wide vanities have space for one sink and are best for small bathrooms.
  • 60" and 72" wide vanities have space for two sinks and are best for large bathrooms.

Choose the Right Top Overhang

  • If a side of your vanity won’t touch a wall, always choose an overhang for that side to prevent water from dripping down the side which can cause damage. On exposed sides, we suggest leaving about 4 inches of space between the side of the vanity and the adjacent wall, which allows for easier cleaning.
  • The stated width of our vanities always includes an overhang of 3/4" on both sides. For example, a 72w vanity with an overhang on just one side is actually 71.25" wide, while a 72w vanity with no overhang is actually 70.5" wide.

Design Tip:
Our full-service delivery team will move your vanity and its top all the way into any room of your home. We recommend keeping your vanity top in its pallet until you’re ready for installation.

What To Tell Your Installer

We recommend sharing these last few tips with your installation professional to ensure the process goes well.

  • A detailed installation guide with measurements is available on every vanity’s product page. Or view all vanity PDFs on our Assembly & Installation page.
  • Consider the existing wall and floor coverings, and whether they need to be altered or removed to install your vanity.
  • A hole will need to be cut in the back of the vanity to connect the plumbing. Vanities cannot be returned once they have been cut or modified.
  • Make sure the interior cabinet space of your desired vanity aligns with your existing or future plumbing. If you’re choosing one of our floating vanities, make sure you’re accounting for the height at which it will be mounted so the interior hits the plumbing at the right point.
  • All our vanities have leveling feet to accommodate uneven floors and surfaces.
