How To Light Your Bedroom
See our favorite tips for how to infuse your bedroom with relaxing lighting.
Layer Your Lighting
- Aim for three layers of lighting in your bedroom: primary (overhead), task or accent for your nightstand, and one more accent for brightening dark corners.
- For primary lighting, use ceiling lights, pendants or chandeliers.
- A large floor lamp can also be used as primary lighting.
Design Tip:
Get 3-way light bulbs or choose dimmable lights for customizable brightness in your bedroom
Next Up, Nightstand
- A table lamp on your nightstand is a classic and beautiful choice for task lighting or accent lighting.
- Save space and draw the eye upward by placing a small pendant or sconce above your nightstand.
- Matching pendants or matching sconces add beautiful symmetry, while mismatched table lamps add unique personality to each side of the bed.
Design Tip:
Light bulbs with a warmer color temperature are best for making bedrooms feel cozy.
Round Out Your Lighting
- Add accent lighting with a table lamp on your dresser or a floor lamp in a corner.
- If you like reading in bed consider a small task lamp to reduce eye strain and partner disturbance.
- If space is tight, use a floor lamp for bedside lighting.
Design Tip:
Place lights at varying heights around the room for a balanced feel.
