How to Design a Dining Room

Design a welcoming dining and kitchen space with these measuring and space planning tips.

Seating

The number of chairs you can fit around a table is determined by a variety of factors, including leg placement and top overhang.

Pedestal or trestle tables fit more people than tables with legs placed at the corners especially when paired with benches or chairs without arms.

Width of Place Setting

For comfort, we recommend 18 to 24 inches per person or place setting.

Tip:
Create cozier seating with a round table and bench seating. Some of our round dining tables are available with a 27‑inch diameter for extra small spaces.

Depth of Table

The general recommended depth for a dining table is 30 to 36 inches. A depth of 36 inches or larger provides more room for platters, serving bowls, pitchers and centerpieces.

Tip:
Consider how else you may use the table—as a desk or prep station, for example—when deciding on the size and material.

Distance Between the Table and Walls or Furniture

We recommend at least three feet (36 inches) clearance around all sides of your table. This allows enough room to walk behind chairs or to open nearby cabinet doors.

Tip:
Place one edge of the table flush with the wall to save space.

Clearance Under the Table

If you have dining chairs with arms, the space between the table and floor will determine whether the arms can tuck all the way under the table. A table apron also impacts how much room you have to cross your legs underneath the table

Table aprons add detail and impact leg space.

Rugs

Allow at least two feet (24 inches) from the edge of the table to the edge of the rug to allow chairs to be pulled out fully without catching on the rug.

Pendant Lights

Hang your dining room pendant approximately 30 inches above the table to keep sight lines open.
