How to Light Your Living Space

Lighting sets the mood in living spaces, whether adding an energy boost for game night or a soothing glow to accompany fireplace gazing. Here are some illuminating tips for versatile, just-right living room lighting.

Think in Layers

  • You need three layers of lighting in your living space: primary (typically overhead), accent (brightening dark corners) and task (such as a reading lamp by a lounger).
  • Adding a dimmer to the mix lets you adjust light levels based on the mood and time of day.

Design Tip:
A ceiling fan/light combination helps save on energy bills by circulating air-conditioning — just set it to turn counterclockwise to create a downward draft for windchill effect.

Start From the Top

  • Choose a ceiling light that can flood your space with light at night and on gloomy days, with a shade that prevents glare when you glance up.
  • Position your ceiling fixture toward the center of a living space, but take note of how light from windows or skylights might subtly alter placement or brightness needs.
  • Consider a flushmount fixture that sits close to the ceiling to send illumination to all corners of a room.

Spotlight Your Best Features

  • Table and floor lamps can point light toward specific areas and for specific purposes like reading or crafts.
  • Place individual lamps so that the bottom of the lampshade is just below eye level when you’re seated to prevent light bulb glare.

Design Tip:
If you’re short on floor space, consider a strategically hung pendant lamp — but be sure it’s at least seven feet above the floor to avoid head bumps.

Bright Little Ideas

  • Wall sconces add great ambient light, plus can draw attention to your favorite wall art as a focal point.
