Cohesive Materials & Colors

  • Choosing the same wood species for your table and chairs easily achieves a coordinated look.
  • If you already have a fabric, rug, wood or stone you know you want in your dining space, look closely at its colors. Pick a few of the same colors or materials and choose them for your table and chairs.

Contrasting vs. Matching

  • Choosing the same color or material across multiple pieces is an easy way to get a cohesive look, but contrast can be visually pleasing.
  • Try bright stone with dark leather, or cool-toned steel with warm-toned wood.

Similar Styles

  • Look for similar shapes and coordinate them, like pairing a table with rounded edges with chairs with rounded backs.
  • If your table is inspired by a specific design influence, like Mid-century Modern, choose chairs that have details from the same era.

Benches vs. Chairs

  • Chairs give everyone their own space, letting each guest easily come and go.
  • Benches bring people closer together, helping you fit more people at the table.
  • If you want flexibility and contrast, try out armchairs at the heads of your table, a bench on one side and a row of armless chairs on the other.

Size Considerations

  • For every chair at a table, we recommend 18 to 24 inches of space.
  • See more dining room measuring tips in our guide How to Design a Dining Room.
