Tabletop materials

We offer two types of tables: all-wood tables and Top + Base tables, which allow you to choose a base style and combine it with a tabletop material that best suits your lifestyle. Learn about the characteristics and performance of our tabletop materials below to find your ideal solution.

Solid wood

Characteristics:

  • warm, natural look with timeless appeal
  • unique grain patterns and natural marks
  • easily mixes with other materials
  • premium grade and sourced from carefully managed U.S. forests
  • lacquer finish or oil-and-wax finish

Considerations:

  • color will change with age
  • expands and contracts based on humidity in your home
  • shows scratches and wear, particularly on stained wood
  • heat and moisture can damage the finish
  • coasters, trivets and placemats will minimize wear and damage
  • lacquer requires professional refinishing if damaged
  • oil-and-wax requires annual reapplication of Room & Board Satin Wax

Butcherblock

Characteristics:

  • natural, classic look with casual appeal
  • adds the warmth of wood at a lower price
  • easily mixes with other materials
  • showcases color variations in natural wood
  • premium grade and sourced from carefully managed U.S. forests
  • lacquer finish

Considerations:

  • not recommended as a cutting or food preparation surface
  • color will change with age
  • expands and contracts based on humidity in your home
  • shows scratches and wear
  • heat and moisture can damage the finish
  • coasters, trivets and placemats will minimize wear
  • round shapes do not feature a beveled edge like round solid wood tops
  • lacquer requires professional refinishing if damaged

Reclaimed wood

Characteristics:

  • sourced from early-1900s barns, industrial buildings and factories
  • warm, natural look with timeless appeal
  • shows unique dents, nicks, cracks and small holes from its previous use
  • disguises new signs of wear and use
  • minimal color change due to age of wood
  • oiled finish

Considerations:

  • unique markings can create an uneven writing surface
  • heat and moisture can damage the finish
  • coasters, trivets and placemats will minimize wear and damage
  • requires bi-annual reapplication of food-grade mineral oil

Quartz composite

Characteristics:

  • sleek and modern
  • consistent color and pattern from slab to slab
  • non-porous, won't absorb stains
  • durable and easy to clean
  • does not require sealing

Considerations:

  • can scratch or chip with heavy use
  • can discolor from direct or prolonged heat
  • coasters, trivets and placemats will minimize wear and damage
  • cool to the touch
  • larger table sizes require two pieces; a seam will be visible

Granite

Characteristics:

  • modern, timeless look with subtle natural variations
  • durable and easy to clean
  • withstands heat
  • can be used indoors and out
  • does not require sealing

Considerations:

  • can stain with prolonged exposure to moisture and oils
  • can chip or scratch with heavy use
  • coasters, trivets and placemats will minimize wear and damage
  • cool to the touch
  • larger table sizes require two pieces; a seam will be visible

Marble

Characteristics:

  • timeless, modern and natural look
  • unique patterns vary from subtle to dramatic
  • withstands heat
  • develops a matte finish with use

Considerations:

  • unsealed surface is porous and susceptible to stains
  • surface will scratch, dull and etch with use and exposure to acidic liquids
  • coasters, trivets and placemats will minimize wear and damage
  • larger table sizes require two pieces; a seam will be visible and the pattern will not match

glass

Characteristics:

  • visual lightness creates an open feeling
  • modern and versatile at a great value
  • allows a rug, table base or chairs to stand out
  • withstands moisture and heat
  • tempered to help protect against injury
  • easy to clean

Considerations:

  • shows fingerprints
  • can scratch or chip with heavy use
  • can create glare in direct light
  • cool to the touch
  • satin etched and colored glass require more maintenance than clear

Medium density fiberboard (MDF)

Characteristics:

  • modern look with solid, low-sheen color at a great value
  • engineered wood product with a durable, non-toxic powder coating; CARB-2 compliant
  • does not expand or contract with humidity
  • easy to clean

Considerations:

  • heat and moisture can damage the finish
  • can chip or scratch with heavy use
  • coasters, trivets and placemats will minimize wear and damage
  • gentle cleaners remove most surface marks

laminated plywood

Characteristics:

  • layers of solid wood veneer adhered for strength
  • laminate top for additional durability
  • modern look with exposed plywood edges
  • easy to clean
  • CARB-2 compliant

Considerations:

  • not recommended as a cutting or food preparation surface
  • can chip or scratch with heavy use
  • heat can damage the finish
